Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treats Recipe
I love rice krispie treats, but I hate when they just taste like marshmallows. Anyone else? These peanut butter rice krispie treats keep the fun, chewy, slightly crispy texture we love from rice krispies but pack a peanut buttery punch that is to die for! This twist on a classic is slightly unexpected and supremely yummy! You’re going to wonder why people even bother with the plain recipe anymore.
If you’ve been following along with my shenanigans for a while, I’m sure you’ve heard me talk about my favorite no-stick trick for making rice krispies. But since it’s so good, I’m going to share it yet again so you don’t have to deal with marshmallow hands while making your peanut butter rice krispie treats!
Here it is – once you’ve poured your peanut butter rice krispie bar mix into the pan, get your hands wet and shake until they’re damp. Then just use your damp hands to gently press the rice krispies into place! Goodbye sticky fingers!!

Ingredients in Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Bars
- Salted butter
- Mini marshmallows – If you cannot find a 16oz bag of mini marshmallows, just use one and a half 10 oz bags.
- Creamy peanut butter – Please, please do not try to use natural peanut butter in this recipe!
- Rice Krispie cereal

How to Make Peanut Butter Rice Krispies
- In an extra large bowl, measure out your Rice Krispie Cereal.
- In a large microwave safe bowl, melt 2 tbsp of butter completely.
- Pour 3/4 of the bag of marshmallows into the bowl and stir to coat with the melted butter.
- Return the bowl to the microwave and cook for 30 seconds and then stir. Repeat one more time until the marshmallows are mostly melted.
- Add the peanut butter to the bowl and stir to combine.
- Pour over the Rice Krispie cereal and stir to coat.
- Once everything is combined, add the remaining marshmallows to the mixture and mix until evenly distributed.
- Pour into a greased pan. I use a 9×9 pan for extra thick cereal treats or in a 9×13 for normal cereal treats.
- Wet your hands slightly and use your damp hands to gently press the mixture into the pan.
- Allow the mixture to set in the pan for 30 minutes before cutting and serving.
- Enjoy!

Are there any variations I can try with this recipe?
Yes, you can top these with melted chocolate chips (or even butterscotch chips or more peanut butter chips) once they’ve set to give them an extra oomph!
How should I store my rice krispie treats?
Store your rice krispie treats in an airtight container for 3 days on the counter before they start getting less soft. Weirdly enough, you can also freeze rice krispie treats for up to 3 months!
