You will love this Magic Cookie Bar Recipe

Magic cookie bars (or 7 layer bars) are supremely decadent and criminally easy to make. My magic cookie bar recipe will walk you through the steps to make these in minutes and uses the classic flavor combinations.

But don’t feel constricted to following exactly what I say – the beauty in these bars is the ability to get creative and mix up the add-ins while still turning out a delicious dessert. So while the recipe calls for pecans, butterscotch and semi-sweet chocolate chips, there’s absolutely no reason you shouldn’t try mixing it up with walnuts, milk chocolate and caramel chips. This 7 layer bars recipe can simply be your starting point for whatever deliciousness you’d like.

What are the 7 layers in 7 Layer bars?

The classic 7 layers in a magic cookie bar are: a graham cracker crumb base, flaked coconut, semi-sweet chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, chopped pecans, vanilla & sweetened condensed milk.

7 Layer Bars Recipe ingredients

  • Graham cracker crumbs‌ – You can just throw these in a zip lock bag and roll over it with a rolling pin to crush these into crumbs. If you feel fancy, you can also roughly chop it with a food processor.
  • Salted butter, melted‌ – I always use salted butter but unsalted would work, too.
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • Vanilla‌
  • Semisweet chocolate chips – Semi-sweet + butterscotch chips is the classic 7 layer bar recipe, but feel free to use whatever combo you’d like!
  • Butterscotch chips‌
  • Flaked coconut – I typically use sweetened for this recipe, but you can also use unsweetened if you prefer.
  • Chopped pecans – You can use any kind of nuts you’d like! I know a lot of people like to use chopped walnuts here and they work great.

How to store Magic Cookie Bars

Can you freeze Magic Cookie Bars?

Yes, you can! I recommend cutting into bars and then freezing in a ziptop bag for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to consume, simply let them thaw on the counter.

How long do Magic Cookie Bars last?

Once cooled, store your magic cookie bars in an airtight container on the counter for 3-5 days!

Magic Cookie Bar Recipe FAQs

Why are my cookie bars raw in the middle?

They probably did not bake as long as needed. Before pulling out of the oven, make sure the sides are golden brown and do the toothpick test to ensure the middle isn’t underbaked.

Can I rebake undercooked cookie bars?

Rebaking might cause your finished 7 layer bars to become dry. Oftentimes if you let the bar sit, it will set up as it cools. If that is not the case, feel free to pop it back in the oven for a few minutes.

How many calories in a magic bar?

This depends entirely on how big you cut your magic cookie bar! If you cut a 9×13 pan into 24 bars, each bar will be about 300 calories.

Can you make Magic Cookie Bars without coconut?

Yep, you sure can! Feel free to customize this recipe to your heart’s desire.
