Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookie Recipe

Walnuts and dessert go hand-in-hand – they add a toasty, nutty crunch that is utterly delicious. So why limit their addition to banana bread when we could spread the love by making walnut chocolate chip cookies too?

If you’re looking to elevate your cookie game, chocolate walnut cookies are the move. Paired with yummy chocolate and a chewy base, adding walnuts to the mix gives your cookies texture and a delightful richness.

Ingredients in Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookies

  • Butter – I always use salted butter. But if you don’t have that on hand, just add an extra pinch of salt to the dough.
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Brown Sugar – The brown sugar in this recipe gives us a nice chewy cookie.
  • Egg
  • Vanilla – Yes, there’s a lot of vanilla in this recipe. But it makes a very vanilla forward cookie dough that I am obsessed with.
  • All Purpose Flour
  • Baking Soda – Baking Soda helps give the cookies a nice even bake and beautiful  brown color.
  • Baking Powder – The addition of Baking Powder creates a lift in the dough while it is baking, giving your cookies the perfect rise.
  • Salt
  • Chocolate Chips  – Use whatever your favorite chocolate chips are.
  • Chopped Walnuts  – I buy my walnuts pre-chopped from the baking aisle.

How to Make Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookies

  1. Begin by preheating the oven to 375°.
  2. In the bowl of a stand mixer or with an electric hand mixer, combine the butter and sugars. Cream the mixture until it is light in color and fluffy in texture (about 2 minutes).
  3. Once the butter is creamed, add in the egg and vanilla. Mix until just combined.
  4. To this mixture, add the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt.
  5. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  6. To the dough, add the chocolate chips and walnuts and mix until evenly distributed.
  7. Portion out the dough to your desired size. For small cookies, use 1 1/2 tbsp of dough (#40 scoop) and for larger cookies, use 3 tbsp of dough (# 24 scoop). I like to roll my dough into a ball, break the dough in half, turn the dough so the rough edges are facing up and then squish the two halves back together to get texture on the top of my cookies (this is optional, but makes them look so good).
  8. Arrange the dough balls on a parchment or silicone lined cookie sheet.
  9. Bake at 375° until the cookies have spread and the edges and tops are golden brown. For the small cookies, 6-8 minutes, for the large cookies 8-10 minutes.
  10. Allow the cookies to cool completely on the pan.
  11. Enjoy!

How do I prevent the cookies from spreading too much while baking?

If your cookies are spreading more than you’d like, add about 1/4 cup more flour to the dough and they won’t spread as much.

Are there any variations for this recipe to change up the flavor?

  • Add in dark chocolate chunks for an extra rich flavor.
  • Replace the walnuts with pecans for a softer nutty flavor.
  • Throw some white chocolate chips in as well!
